The Challenge

Athena Security builds AI-powered concealed weapons detection and visitor management systems for schools, hospitals, casinos, and warehouse facilities across North America. It's high-consideration B2B with a long sales cycle — security directors research obsessively, build shortlists from comparison and "how it works" queries, and only then talk to sales.

The category is crowded and competitive, and when the engagement began, the comparison queries that decide which vendors make a shortlist were dominated by competitors. Athena had technology that wins head-to-head evaluations — the opportunity was to make sure buyers found it during the research phase, before the shortlist was set.

The Strategy

  1. Rebuild the technical foundation

Site speed, crawl architecture, and structured data for products and FAQs — so every page that followed had a clean platform to rank from.

  2. Win the bottom of the funnel first

Comparison pages, spec-driven solution pages, and buyer-question content aimed at the exact queries security directors search when they're building a shortlist. Revenue-adjacent queries before awareness content, always.

  3. Cover both buying committees

Athena sells weapons detection and visitor management — two products, two different buyers. Each got its own content track, so a hospital facilities director and a school safety officer each land on a page written for them.

  4. Earn the authority to rank

Digital PR in the security and education-safety press, building the link profile and entity signals a B2B security brand needs to compete for national queries.

  5. Show up in AI answers, not just Google

Content structured to be cited by AI assistants answering "best weapons detection system" questions — the research layer where more and more shortlists now start.

  6. Measure weekly, rework what stalls

Position tracking on the 69 queries that shape shortlists. Every move measured weekly; pages that plateaued got reworked, not left to drift.

Six months in, Athena had 3.6x the organic traffic, triple the #1 rankings — and owned the queries that decide who makes the shortlist.

The Results

(GA4 and SEMrush position tracking, October 2025 – June 2026)

Within eight weeks of kickoff the bottom-of-funnel pages were ranking. Six months in, organic traffic had grown 3.6x against the pre-engagement baseline, and the shortlist-shaping queries had flipped from competitor-owned to Athena-owned.

  2. Feb 2026

Organic traffic jumps 64% in a single month — already well past double the pre-engagement baseline.

  5. Jun 2026

Best month yet: 3.6x baseline traffic, 30 keywords at #1, visibility at 48%.

Why it worked

Bottom-of-funnel content pays back fastest. The comparison and buyer-question pages started ranking inside eight weeks — and those are the queries that produce demo requests, not just sessions.

Two products means two funnels. Splitting weapons detection and visitor management into separate content tracks doubled the surface area for #1 rankings; visitor-management terms now rank alongside the flagship.

Weekly tracking turns SEO into an operating loop. Ranking movement reviewed every week decided what got written or reworked next. Nothing waited for a quarterly report.
